This shaving brush handle is made from ash wood from a tree that grew on top of Cloncurry Motte, County Kildare.Local stories say the trees on the motte were planted to celebrate the Duke of Wellington's victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The ash tree died from ash dieback disease. The landowner planted a new oak tree in its place.
The motte itself dates back to the Anglo-Norman period. A castle, a church, a graveyard and a village once stood nearby. Natural voids in the wood were filled with copper and Iron inlays.
Wood stabilizing is a process used to enhance the durability and stability of wood by making it more resistant to environmental factors like moisture and temperature changes. This technique involves placing the wood in a vacuum chamber to remove air and moisture, then introducing a stabilizing resin under pressure. I stabilise wood myself in my workshop.
